Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Climate Change High Level Champion for Egypt and UN Special Envoy on Financing 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, said that COP27 will focus on the actual implementation of climate pledges through mobilizing the required financing and setting specific time frameworks for the implementation process.
Mohieldin added, during a phone interview on Thursday for “East Circle” presented by Zeina Yazigi on Asharq TV, that Egypt focused since it have been declared as the next host and president of COP on pushing towards implementing climate action not only at the level of countries but also at the level of companies and all entities that contribute in a way or another to harmful emissions.
Mohieldin answered a question about energy crisis saying that in the time that some countries went back to use dirty sources of energy such as fossil fuels, other countries showed big interest in investing in new and renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and green hydrogen.
The climate champion emphasized that COP27 will call for adopting a holistic approach for climate action that focuses on financing and implementing adaptation measures equally as mitigation ones, discussing losses and damages resulting from climate change, beside mobilizing sufficient finance for climate action either from public or private sources.
By the end of his intervention, Mohieldin said that COP27 will witness a distinct participation of leaders from Europe and Asia, beside the participation of African and Arab leaders considering that the conference is an international event that organized on African and Arab land.
